HEALTH CHECKS & VACCINATIONS

Every year, when your pet comes to the clinic for their booster vaccination, they will receive a complimentary full health check by one of our vets. It is important to ensure they are in good health before vaccinations are given. It is important to ensure they are in good health before vaccinations are given.A year is a long time in a pet’s life, so we advise bringing your pet to us for regular health checks at least every 6 months (pets on long term medication may require more frequent checks). These checks can help to pick up developing problems, and give you a chance to discuss any concerns or areas where you would like advice. Following any routine appointment, we will give you with a report of everything found during the vet’s examination and any recommendations we have made.Vaccinations against infectious diseases are essential for all dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets. Though we are fortunately seeing less incidences of killer diseases, lapsed vaccinations are the most common reason for outbreaks. For dogs, as well as the routine boosters, we also recommend vaccinating against kennel cough – this vaccine is given nasally.Puppies and kittens can start their vaccination program from as early as 6 weeks old, Kittens From 9 weeks old… please discuss with one of our team to find out what is appropriate for your new arrival. Following the initial course, booster vaccinations are essential to maintain immunity and we will drop you a line to let you know when you need to come back.

PREVENTIVE HEALTHCARE

As well as regular vaccinations and health checks, there are a wide range of preventive healthcare options available, to help you keep your pet as happy and healthy as possible throughout life. We will discuss preventative healthcare with you at routine health checks, and make recommendations based on your pet’s individual needs. You can also talk to one of our team at any time if you have any questions about what you could be doing for your pet.

Flea & worming treatment

We advise regular treatment against fleas and worms, and can advise you on the best product for your pet and how often it should be used. Flea infestations are unpleasant for pet and owner alike, but with regular treatment can be avoided. Many of these products can be purchased over the counter provided your pet is registered with and has been to us within the past year for a health check. If you are unsure of your pet’s weight, please bring them to the hospital where a staff member will be able to weigh them and ensure you are getting the correct dose needed – no appointment is needed for this weight check.

Dental products

Although we routinely brush our own teeth twice a day, many of us would not consider brushing our pet’s teeth. However, dental disease is common in domestic pets, with many suffering from tartar build up, gingivitis and other oral problems, may of which require treatment under anaesthetic.

Identification

We strongly advise microchipping your pet. By inserting the small ‘identichip’ under your pet’s skin, you are ensuring your pet has a permanent form of identification. Microchips are invaluable in helping to reunite lost pets with their owners. The chip costs  £20 can be inserted at any time, though is most commonly done at a puppy or kittens second vaccination visit, or at the time of neutering.

Pet Insurance

We strongly recommend taking out pet insurance for your animals. There are a range of policies available to suit every budget, but it is important to read the small print. Some policies will only cover for a particular condition for 12 months, and we would expect a middle aged dog, for instance, diagnosed with arthritis to carry on for a great deal longer than that. Some are also better and quicker at paying out claims! We have a number of leaflets from various companies at the practice, and any of our team will be happy to advise you on what features to look for in a pet insurance policy.

DIAGNOSTICS

Laboratory Our dedicated in-house laboratory enables us to perform the majority of the tests we require right here at the clinic.Test results are normally available within 24 hours, and in some cases the tests may even be run and the results obtained while you wait. Tests we can carry out on site include blood and urine tests, skin tests and virology. Some more specialised tests will be are sent to a local external laboratory, often arriving with them and being processed on the same day that the sample was obtained.

Radiography Radiography is an important tool in many diagnoses. As well as examining bones, radiography can also be used to view soft tissue and organs, or to look for foreign bodies within the tissues.

Ultrasound Ultrasound scanning is a valuable diagnostic tool and we have the most up to date scanner on site. One benefit of ultrasound scanning is that it can often be used without giving the patient anaesthetic and it is a non-invasive procedure. It can be used in a range of situations from pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring to examination of the heart, liver, kidneys and other internal organs, diagnosis of bladder stones, heart and lung disease.

Endoscopy Use of the endoscope enables the vet to view directly inside your pet’s intestines or lungs. This piece of equipment is invaluable for obtaining samples without putting the patient through invasive surgery

Surgery We perform most of the surgery your pet will require on site , be it from a minor stitch up , to a major orthopaedic operation with the assistance of an orthopaedic specalist .
